How to draw an owl, step by step
A big-eyed cartoon owl from two ovals, two circles and six straight lines. The eyes do all the work.
Draw this owl on screen →Mouse, finger or stylus. Each stroke is scored; free, no account.
You'll need
Paper and a pencil, then pens or crayons to colour in. Or nothing at all: draw it on screen and each stroke gets a score for how straight, round and smooth it is.
Steps
-
Step 1: the body
Draw a tall oval for the body, filling most of the page from top to bottom.
-
Step 2: the left ear tuft
Draw the left ear tuft with two straight lines: up from the top of the body to a point, then back in towards the middle.
-
Step 3: the right ear tuft
Draw the right ear tuft to match.
-
Step 4: the left eye
Draw a big circle for the left eye, in the upper half of the body.
-
Step 5: the right eye
Draw the right eye the same size, just touching or close to the left one.
-
Step 6: the belly
Draw a smaller oval low on the body for the belly.
-
Step 7: the beak
Draw the beak as two short straight lines meeting in a point, between and just below the eyes.
-
Step 8: colour it in
Colour the body brown, the ear tufts darker brown, the belly light tan, the eyes yellow and the beak orange. Add big black pupils with a white sparkle, a few small curved feathers on the belly and little orange feet at the bottom.
Tips
- Make the eyes big: almost half the width of the body. Big eyes are what make an owl cute.
- Draw the two eye circles at exactly the same height; uneven eyes make the owl look confused (which can also be fun).
- Draw the beak as two quick lines from the top down to the point.
Questions
What shapes do I need to draw an owl?
Two ovals (body and belly), two circles (eyes) and six straight lines (two ear tufts and the beak).
How do I draw owl eyes?
Draw two big circles side by side, then a large black circle inside each for the pupil and a small white dot for the sparkle. Placing the pupils slightly towards each other makes the owl look at you.
How do I draw owl wings?
Draw a long oval on each side of the body, slightly overlapping it, and colour them a darker brown than the body.
