How to draw a perfect circle freehand

A good freehand circle comes from a loop your arm already knows. You build that loop by rehearsing it in the air, then drawing it in one even sweep.

1. Rotate from the shoulder

Small circles can come from the fingers, but anything bigger than a coin comes out lumpy that way. Move from the shoulder and keep the wrist still: the loop becomes even.

2. Ghost the loop a few times

Circle above the page two or three times, then lower the pen while your hand is already moving. Starting from a standstill puts a flat spot or a hook where you begin.

3. Keep one speed all the way round

People slow down on the part of the circle that feels awkward (for right-handers often the top-left), and that's exactly where it goes flat. One quick, even sweep beats a slow careful one.

4. Lift off where it meets

Go once round and lift as the end reaches the start. Going round twice hides a lumpy circle but doesn't train a round one.

Practise circles every day

Circles are a warm-up that pays off in everything round: heads, wheels, cups, eyes. The daily set has six, each a different size and place, scored for roundness, accuracy and smoothness.

Questions

What is a good score for a freehand circle?

It depends on the device. With a pen or stylus, scores in the 80s are good and the 90s are excellent. With a mouse, scores are lower; what matters is that your own average rises week by week.

Clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Practise both. Most people have a stronger direction; the weaker one improves fastest with daily practice.

Is it cheating to draw over a guide?

No. Drawing over a guide trains the motion and the size at once. Once it is easy, try placing circles freehand on blank paper.
