Most cartoon animals are a few simple shapes put together: a circle for the head, ovals for ears and eyes, a couple of straight lines for whiskers. Learn to draw those shapes cleanly and you can draw almost anything cute. Pick an animal above to see it built up one step at a time, or draw it right here in your browser with a mouse, finger or stylus and get a score for each stroke.
Tips for every animal
- Start with the biggest shape. Head or body first; ears, eyes and whiskers then have something to sit on.
- Draw each shape in one stroke. A quick, confident circle looks better than a slow one patched together. Rehearse the motion in the air first: that's the ghosting method.
- Keep it light, then ink. On paper, sketch with light pressure and go over the lines you like.
- Practise the shapes on their own. Three minutes of circles, ellipses and straight lines a day makes every drawing easier.
